CHALLENGES: Adapting the spaces of the Teacher Training Institute’s administrative building, completed in 1979, to meet the current and future needs of an elementary school and a new educational curriculum. Integrating necessary building technical improvements into the architecture of the building while preserving its cultural and historical value in the Seminaarin school campus environment.
SOLUTIONS: The efficiency of space utilization was improved by partially merging the previous long central corridor with adjacent spaces and creating shared learning lounge areas for pre-school and early elementary groups. The brightness and openness of the spaces were enhanced. In place of the former auditorium, new learning spaces were created spanning two floors, designed in a way that allows for flexible furniture arrangements. The facade material was chosen to complement the original architecture of the building and not compete for attention with the adjacent Seminaari building, which is protected under the heritage conservation law.
