SAAMELAISTEN KULTTUURIKESKUS SAJOS

CHALLENGES: The extensive space program required for the parliament building, fitting the large scale into the small buildings of the adjacent village while still conveying the necessary dignity. Respecting the local culture and dealing with harsh weather conditions, along with the energy efficiency requirements.

SOLUTIONS: A star-shaped design that echoes the visual language of Saami culture’s artifacts while allowing for the division of different functions into various parts of the building. The boundary between indoor and outdoor space has been architecturally blurred, with outdoor spaces playing a significant role in the overall design. Pleasant spaces have been created through the use of materials, including wood both inside and outside. The implementation is based on the winning proposal of an international design competition.
